John Lafferty Brewer was sheriff from 1874-1879. He was born about 1843, possibly in Van Buren County, and died October 22, 1883 in Cleburne County. He married Mary California Meneese in Quitman, Arkansas on November 15, 1878. He served in Co. A, 32nd Arkansas Infantry (Confederate) during the Civil War. Mr. Brewer was on the executive committee to form Cleburne County. He was moved to Cove-Kendall Cemetery before Greers Ferry Lake formed.
