William Sherman Maddox was sheriff from 1890-1893 and 1896-1899. He was born December 30-1853 in Van Buren County to John and Kate Maddox. He died December 9, 1922 and is buried in Clinton Cemetery. He married Alice Bradley on January 8, 1882 and they had five children. His most notable experience as sheriff was apprehending Lee Mills and Will Hardin after Hugh Patterson was murdered on Culpepper Mountain.
